Tuesday Tip - Invite Writing Prompts

Welcome to Tuesday Tips - a weekly blog post for busy writers!

Here is a Tuesday tip to improve your writing.

Invite writing prompts from an outside source.

I don’t lack for writing projects. They range from “what’s my next novel” to a “weekly newspaper article” and even “shopping lists.” And yet, I find myself stumped at times. Something fortunate happened that has helped to keep me in my writing seat a little more regularly. My kids gave me a Christmas gift that included a weekly question delivered to my email from this site.

It’s helping.

Often, the question sparks a thought or memory that immediately gets me plinking out paragraphs to share. There have been a few that require a little more thought and reflection. This week’s question presents a challenge of a different sort, because the answer is hard to narrow down.

“What is one of the most beautiful places you have ever been?”

I have been to a lot of beautiful places, but I had never thought about writing about one just for fun.

How can this help improve my writing? This unexpected question, or any question, might spark a scene in a work of fiction. It may be the catalyst for a character or a location, even an online review. At the very least, an unexpected question will offer an opportunity to write about something unplanned and will keep you writing.

So go ahead, open up to the unexpected. Here’s a question from me - just for fun.

What aroma always brings back a specific memory?

Have fun with it and feel free to post your answer in the comments below.

Happy Writing!
